Guitar Program at Parkrose Middle

Vibrant Village Foundation partners with Artichoke Music and the SUN Program at Parkrose Middle school to provide an afterschool guitar program to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

The students are really into the guitar program, taking risks, learning a lot, and enjoying the process.

Artichoke Music is a nonprofit music community center that has been supporting musicians and audiences in Portland for over forty years. For several years, Artichoke has collaborated with SUN Community schools to deliver high quality music instruction to students in low-income schools. As seen through their programs, playing music boosts students’ self-esteem and confidence, and helps them stay more engaged in school.

The guitar program was a welcome addition to the Parkrose SUN program, which was first introduced in 2015. The program, which is fully funded by Vibrant Village Foundation in its pilot year, meets two times a week, on Mondays for a practice session and on Wednesdays for a lesson, which gives students a more in-depth opportunity to develop their interest and talents in music.

Over the course of 9 weeks, with the support of music teachers from Artichoke and community volunteers, students learn how to play the guitar. Many have never picked up an instrument before, and learn how to play and care for their guitar. Students are also introduced to the fundamentals of music theory and learn to play a range of contemporary songs. Along the way, students keep a journal to reflect on their musical journey and to sketch out new songs.
