Located in the central hills of rural Nicaragua, the village of El Bálsamo is a small settlement amid arid and rough land. The 55 families that live here face difficult conditions for agriculture with little arable land and water. In this region, over half the men migrate seasonally to Costa Rica, which leaves women heads-of-household responsible for caring for families and their community.
